Kentucky Goes Global

An email from Margaret, who is currently working over in London for a few months (lucky):

So my friend Susie is doing what I”m doing work-wise, but in Osaka, and for a year.  She goes to visit a friend in the burbs outside Osaka and writes me this – (and see attached pic)
“then today we went to this hilarious (but good) place called U.K. diner.  i figured it was british food but instead it was a university of kentucky themed restaurant!  UK gear all over the place and a motorcycle inside and american food!”
i mean that’s amazing.  i have no idea what the link between japan and U Kentucky is, but it’s strong.  Meg – I wonder if they televised the NCAA game there and all wore jorts???!!!

Yes, those are NASCAR cars, trucks (I just learned there is a NASCAR truck series), and big rigs lining the walls and a Camaro chair in the forefront.  The allure of Kentucky culture knows no bounds.

Midnight Madness

Why, you might ask, does UKs campus look like a refugee camp?  Maybe the President is coming to talk? A Nobel Laureate?

Try the first basketball practice of the season.

Yes, practice.  Not game.

Rupp Arena doesn’t allow people to camp out in front of it until 3 days before the event. So everyone camps out across the street for the first few days, so they can get a camping spot in front of Rupp as soon as they open it up for camping.  This is all to get in line at 2am the day before for free event tickets.

It’s called Midnight Madness.  They introduce the team.  Coach Cal is there.  It is a VERY. BIG. DEAL.

Go Cats.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Last weekend, after the inferno bike ride, temperatures PLUMMETED to the mid-50s at night with highs of 65 during the day.  And it started raining.

And just like that–BOOM–it’s fall.

Jersey’s back on devil dog.  You know what this means.

Tailgating.  Cornhole.  Campers.  Wildcat blue mini dresses with big belts and cowboy boots.

First homegame of the season.   And absolutely beautiful weather.

We can hear the whole game announced from our house.  Louisville is next weekend.

Go Cats.

…but there is no joy in Jortsville

Bad weekend for Kentucky.

I was actually in New York city for the game, but found the Kentucky bar in NYC (as you can see from the picture above.)  I came home to find the town in quiet despair…nobody even cared about watching the final game.

So tonight, instead of watching the game, Paul and I went to our favorite Cajun restaurant around the block.

Last week they were giving away free meals for anyone who came in and made their jeans into jorts.  Apparently, it wasn’t enough.  Sad, sad weekend.

Oh, and Spike ate our blueberry bush.

Jorts on Fire

Things just got serious.

(above photo courtesy of my phone in a dark bar, 3 seconds after the final shot)

Kentucky is on its way to the Elite Eight.

There is a player on the UK team that everyone calls Jorts (because that is what he wears around campus).  He is the only senior on the team, and this year they changed Senior Day to Jorts Day.  Everybody wore jorts.  For reals.

Anyway, yesterday, Jorts had an amazing game and Kentucky ousted #1 seed Ohio State.  It.  Was.  Awesome.

UNC v. UK tomorrow.

GO CATS.

Wildcat Nation

The temperature in Kentucky this past week has been 70s with little to no humidity.  It has been clear and dry and gorgeous.  It’s official: Fall is here.  Which excites me for a number of reasons, including:

  • The weather
  • The leaves
  • Pumpkin beer (despite Joe’s recent post, which I will choose to ignore for the time being)
  • Thanksgiving
  • And of course, football

Yesterday I learned that my excitement for football is of a different breed than that of the UK community.  This is a picture of the stadium parking lot:

OK, in downloading that picture I realize it doesn’t really do the parking lot justice.  The lot is full of RVs with UK flags waving, and traffic (on the other side of the lot) backed up down the street and up onto the main road.

The first game of the season is Saturday at 7:30 PM.  This picture was taken on Friday at 7:00.  In the morning.

And the game is against Western Kentucky, not  considered a “big game”.

AND Kentucky doesn’t even have a good football team.  According to Paul, basketball season is a whole different animal.
